Heinemann Video Gallery (Primary)

Developed in collaboration with the BBC, the Heinemann Video Gallery for Primary offers three comprehensive subject-based collections of curriculum-linked and copyright cleared video clips to support teachers and stimulate pupils at Key Stages 1 and 2.

Each module listed below is available separately, but schools subscribing to more than one module available as part of the Heinemann Video Gallery for Primary and
Secondary will be able to cross search them through the same interface.

Relevance to the National Curriculum

All clips are matched to a QCA scheme of work unit and objective. In addition to a wide choice of subject videos, each module contains hundreds of topic clips that link to cross-curricular themes, as well as supporting the main subject areas.

Content

A team of teachers worked closely with media researchers at BBC Motion Gallery to locate the most appropriate and stimulating archive footage for all the clips. They also prepared the notes, worksheets and usage suggestions that accompany the videos in each of the following modules:

  • Primary Module A: Geography, History, RE and Citizenship: Contains more than 760 curriculum-linked video clips to support teaching at Key Stages 1 and 2, as well as over 400 cross-curricular topic clips.
  • Primary Module B: Science and Literacy: Contains nearly 1000 curriculum-linked video clips to support teaching at Key Stages 1 and 2, as well as 150 cross-curricular topic clips.
  • Primary Module C: Maths, Art & Design and PE: Contains over 450 curricum-linked video clips to support teaching at Key Stages 1 and 2, plus 150 cross-curricular topic clips.

Special features include:

  • Curriculum links, hints and ideas for classroom usage, plus a short summary of each clip's content and length, are available for each clip
  • Sound is also available for all clips - either the original soundtrack, audio specially recorded for curriculum relevance, or music.
  • Personal playlists for use in specific lessons can be created with ease and shared with colleagues.
  • A full screen playback option allows for high quality streaming of BBC footage on interactive whiteboards.
  • Search by keyword, or browse by subject and key stage.

Access options

Access to modules available as part of the Heinemann Video Gallery is currently available by username and password. Access via Shibboleth will be available in 2010.

An unlimited number of staff and students at subscribing schools can access modules available as part of the Heinemann Video Gallery concurrently so they can be used in the classroom with confidence.

Pricing

Pricing is calculated according to the total number of learners at a school, or schools within a region - so the more schools that subscribe to a resource as a group, the lower the price per learner is likely to be.

All suppliers have guaranteed that the prices negotiated by JISC Collections are the lowest available.

Subscription and invoicing information

  • The agreement for Heinemann Video Gallery runs until 31 August 2012.
  • Schools and buying groups can subscribe to one or more modules at any time but are committed until the end of the subscription year in which their subscription starts i.e. 31 August 2010, 31 August 2011, or 31 August 2012.
  • Charges will be prorated - for example, if a subscription starts on 1 January 2010, the cost of the subscription will be for 8 months until 31 August 2010.

Please note that subscriptions will not be set up, and access granted, until a signed copy of the Acceptance of Licence Agreement Form (see below) has been received by JISC Collections for Schools.

An invoice from the subscription start date until the end of the subscription year will also be issued when the signed copy of the Acceptance of Licence Agreement Form (see below) is received.

    • Keep one signed copy of the full Acceptance of Licence Form for your records.

    • An invoice from the subscription start date until the end of the subscription year will also be sent when the signed Acceptance of Licence Form has been received by JISC Collections for Schools.

How to get the best price

Prices offered through JISC Collections for Schools are guaranteed to be the lowest available. Schools subscribing individually to one or more JISC Collections for Schools resources benefit from discounts on publishers' list prices in the majority of cases, but schools subscribing as part of a buying group can achieve discounts of up to 75%.

A buying group can consist of any group of schools in a region with a combined total of at least 2,500 learners that places an order for a resource at the same time.

Local authorities, and organisations such as School Library Services, are taking an active role in coordinating buying groups in many areas in order to achieve the highest possible discount.

In addition, an increasing number of schools in informal local or regional networks are also working together to secure the best possible pricing.

The Heinemann Video Gallery has been created by teachers for teachers:

  • Clips are matched to a QCA scheme of work unit and objective.
  • Teachers can browse by subject and key stage, as well as search by keyword.
  • Curriculum links are included for each clip to make lesson planning easier.
  • Hints and ideas for classroom usage are available for each clip.
  • A short summary of each clip's content and length helps teachers slot the right video clips into the right lessons to enliven and enrich their teaching.
  • Personal playlists for use in specific lessons can be created with ease and shared with colleagues.
  • A full screen playback option allows for high quality streaming of BBC footage on interactive whiteboards.
  • Links and stills can be incorporated into teaching materials and pupil projects.
