Relevance to the National Curriculum

The Times Digital Archive is suitable for the teaching, learning and coursework requirements of a wide range of subjects (including History, Economics, Politics, Geography, English, ICT, Science and Technology, Art, Music, RE, and Modern Languages) up to and including A/AS level and the International Baccaluareate.

Content

The Times Digital Archive offers cross-searchable access to every page as published in 200 years of The Times newspaper in a user friendly online format.

It offers learners the opportunity to get an invaluable close-up view of 200 years of world history in the making and to look at key events as they were reported rather than just from the historical perspective.   For example:

  • When did the first coverage of Adolf Hitler appear in The Times?
  • What views were expressed at the time, and how did attitudes change over the course of the war?
  • What can advertisements tell us about everyday life during and after the war?

Users can choose to view facsimilies of chosen articles, or whole newspaper pages to see articles in context. The full content can be explored by date or date range, and/or by keyword. Searches can also be limited to article title, illustrated articles, and/or to particular categories such as News, Features, Editorial and Commentary, Advertisements or People.

Access options

A range of access options is on offer to enable teachers and learners to use all JISC Collections for Schools resources both within the school (for example, by IP address) and from home (for example, via Shibboleth, a link on the school's secure intranet, and/or username and password).

An unlimited number of staff and students at subscribing schools can access each JISC Collections for Schools resource concurrently so they can be used in the classroom with confidence.

Pricing

Pricing is calculated according to the total number of learners at a school, or schools within a region - so the more schools that subscribe to a resource as a group, the lower the price per learner is likely to be.
